James A. (Jack) Ryan is a native Arkansan who began his military career in 1948.After serving as Infantry Brigade Commander and as Chief of Staff of the Arkansas Army National Guard, General Ryan was appointed the Adjunct General of the Arkansas National Guard in1986, and promoted to Major General.

General Ryan retired from the Arkansas National Guard in September 1993 with over 45 years of military service.In 1993, General Ryan began work with the United States Department of Defense.He was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense where he served until 1995.General Ryan's many military awards include the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service and the United States Army Legion of Merit.

Currently General Ryan is an active citizen of Little Rock.He has worked with the Military History Commission of Little Rock, the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, and the Advisory Board of the Quapaw Area Scout Council.He served as Military Analysis for KARK TV, NBC, Little Rock, Arkansas during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, and Secretary General Taiwan - United States Sister Relations Alliance.

General Ryan is married to the former Alice Lee.They have four children, James A. Jr., Barbara Carol, Patricia Ray, and John Patrick.
