James Ryan, of the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control, was among six prosecution witnesses to take the stand at the second-degree manslaughter trial of Alan G. Baird III.

As the fire rapidly burned out of control, a "flashover" stoked by heated gases occurred in the stairwell area, Ryan said, creating temperatures of about 1,500 degrees in some ceiling areas and between 250 and 300 degrees on the floor.
