We get some good ones , says Larry Rutledge , FedEx's manager of packaging design and development , who looks like everybody's favourite uncle.Rutledge has been doing this all his working life and he gets a kick out of talking about it.
FedEx , he says , has shipped everything from ostrich eggs to tropical fish to caskets. His favourite all-time shipment was costumes for Walt Disney characters. For that one , bird seed had to be used for insulation because it has special properties that make it ideally suited to absorb shock.
Some of the most intense packaging work is done for computers , especially laptops , which must be able to absorb all kinds of impact while in transit , and flowers , which are not only fragile but perishable.
FedEx has even developed a special package for shipping flowers complete with wet-ice packets and specially designed boxes for everything from seedling plants to complete bouquets , like Thiessen's.
