   According to the survey , 98 percent of respondents believe that hoisting a heavy object can cause a hernia , and more than half believe that coughing can bring on the condition.

   These estimates may be consistent with older techniques , but hernia surgery is so much easier than it used to be , said Rutkow. Conventional tissue-to-tissue repair techniques are associated with recovery periods offour to six weeks , largely due to the fact that the procedure involves pulling tissues together to close the abnormal opening , which causes discomfort.
   
   But now , more and more surgeons are using a newer technique called tension-free repair in which the mesh PerFix ( R ) plug is inserted into the opening. This dramatically decreases the patient's post-operative discomfort because there's no tension on the tissues. Patients can be back on their feet and involved in the activities they enjoy in a few days , Rutkow said. The technique is associated with a recurrence rate of less than one percent.
   
   Where do Americans go from here. Some should be headed to the doctor's office. One in 20 of those in the Bard-Roper Starch Report say they currently have a hernia. But of these , one in six have yet to step up to the plate for the surgery that will cure their condition.
