Nancy Rutherford, another volunteer, directs Foster Grandparents program in Kingman for NAU and the Western Arizona Council of Governments.
Rutherford said she has seven program volunteers in Kingman and would like to have a dozen more.
"Some of the children tutored go up in grade level and become honor roll students," Rutherford said. "The compassion and warmth they feel toward the foster grandparent is wonderful.
"The foster grandparent gives of their time and gets back a lot, so participation in the program makes them feel wonderful."
Sargent Shriver, an official in the Kennedy administration, conceived the Foster Grandparent program during the 1960s, Rutherford said.
She said the program name probably should have been senior mentors or something similar.

Applicants complete some paperwork and undergo a background check, Rutherford said.
