   "The decoration doesn't make it run any better," comments Brinton Rutherford, director of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.The decoration is purely ornamental.
   
   "So when one uses the term 'plain people"- it's an intention," he adds.

   Brinton and his staff have arranged the best of the society's materials collected during the past half century into three thematic areas representing home, church and school, and the land.

   None of the decorative elements was necessary, explains Rutherford, but all add considerably to the finished product.They also add to the "tension between decorating for the plain community and yet being plain."
   
   In the home section, stars and other decorations add interest to furniture, ceramics, textiles, clocks and other pieces.
   
   Of a brightly decorated teapot, Rutherford says, "It was never used to serve tea.
