Tom Ruth, president of the Glatfelter Library Board, attended last week's school board meeting to ask for money for the library.
Ruth said the library had a drastic cut in state funding two years ago that caused it to have to cut its hours of operation. The library is open only three nights a week and is closed on Fridays.
"We really would like to get back to some better hours," Ruth said.
Noting the shared goals of the school district and library for educating district students, Ruth said about half the school districts in the area provide annual funding to local libraries, ranging from $2,000 to $11,000 per year.
Expenses: The largest expense for the library is salaries, and additional funds are needed for operation costs and acquisition of materials, he said. Ruth reported that only one library employee receives benefits.

The board approved last year providing snow removal services to the library, but Ruth said that service is already donated to the library. He said the library needs money, not in-kind donations.
Ruth has approached the municipalities served by the library for funding and added that increased local funding might result in higher state funding.
