They were bringing in a new coach in Robert Rubel, and only half of their starters were back from a team that finished 1-9.
Rubel, however, has been busy building a fresh attitude at Hawley right under our noses.
And if Friday's 15-14 win at Coleman is any indicator, he has already established the first ingredient of success: belief.
...
"One of the things we've been stressing from Day 1 is overcoming adversity, and finding a group of kids who believe we can win," said Rubel, who graduated from Cooper in 1988.
"There were a couple of times (at Coleman) where he had a bad situation, but we keep after them about keeping their heads up.
"I don't want to see anyone looking at the ground.
Keep your heads up, be proud and keep moving forward is our team motto."
Rubel brings a mixture of college and high school experience to Hawley, having most recently served as the defensive coordinator at East Central University in Oklahoma.
He was also the head coach at Tabor College in Kansas in 2006.
"Our deal is to come into work every day and try to get better," Rubel said.
