It would be nice if people devoting the time and money into muscle cars would also consider more sustainable options, said Peter Roland, co-ordinator for the B.C. Sustainable Energy Association.

"They are a distraction and ultimately they fuel a fantasy of individual power which is in conflict with natural systems indeed which is now at risk or irrevocably harming the planet," he said.

But even Roland admits his head turns when a flashy car goes by.

"Do muscle cars help with this larger agenda - no, clearly they don't," he said.
