Said Rob Robless, chief technology officer at United Airlines, an early and prominent supporter of the alliance:

"The specification establishes a handle by which identity can be established between two different businesses. If someone signs into united.com and uses their profile, then we pass the handle over to Hilton; the only thing passed is that person's handle."

The specs' simplified sign-in functions will mean that once linked to a given site that is part of a federated identity application, users do not need to re-authenticate at each site they visit.

Officials said the specs are intended to overcome some of the frustration, typically among consumers, in the limitations they experience when seeking to transact business on the Internet.

In the future, Robless said, the Liberty Alliance hopes to add more granular control functions, such as the ability to allow a user to define what profile information they would like to be shared between related sites in a federated identity application.

"The intention is that the user gives direct permission for which part of their profile ought to be shared between those businesses," he explained.

Navigating different Web sites requires frequent stops to sign on, the equivalent of running into a toll booth every mile on the highway, according to Rob Robless, United Airlines chief technology officer.

"There are some issues we need to overcome to increase the consumer acceptance to buy things or use services on the Internet," Robless said. Also needed is a foundation for partnerships "so we can make more interesting products or services to buy off the Internet."

When Sun launched Liberty in September, it was a direct assault on Microsoft's Passport service, which handled single-sign on by using a centralized authentication site run by Microsoft.

The new spec has five features to facilitate secure sign-on to intranet and Internet sites, allowing users to decide if they want to link that sign-on to a company's other partner sites, said Rob Robless, CTO of United Airlines.

Those features include opt-in account linking, so a user can choose whether or not to link an account to another Liberty-enabled site; simplified sign-on, so a user is not required to log in again to a linked site; and authentication context, so linked companies can decide on the basis to authenticate a user when he or she logs in.

Other features are global log-out that logs a user out of all the linked sites when he or she logs out on one; and the Liberty Alliance client feature, which implements the Liberty 1.0 spec on a particular fixed or wireless client.
