The evening started out with President, Paul Robertson,s opening remarks and welcome to the group.Paul started by thanking the sponsors of the Niagara Woodlot Association, for without their help, a lot of the initiatives of the organization could not be achieved. The mission of the Niagara Woodlot Association is in, ,protecting the special natural features of the Niagara Peninsula for future generations., That being said, Paul continued his opening remarks with an overview of the year,s accomplishments. One of the major accomplishments was getting the Ministry of Finance to adopt the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program, which basically gives woodlot owners the same tax assessment as farmland, rather than vacant land as was the previous method of taxation. This was a huge joint accomplishment of the efforts of various Woodlot Associations. Mr. Robertson went on to speak about the impact the Emerald Ash Borer will have on the ash tree population in Canada, particularly in Niagara Region.

Paul Robertson also spoke about the hopeful announcement of the land trust the Woodlot Association has been working hard to achieve.Currently, the founding committee is working at developing the constitution and by-laws and hopes to receive it,s charitable designation in the new year. The land trust is needed to preserve the natural forests and lands in the Niagara Region.Niagara Region has a very low number of government owned forests.Paul explained, ,this is due to in the 1950,s when local governments were purchasing lands to stop soil erosion, etc., Niagara was not doing so.
