Mike Robertson, senior policy advisor of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation, is worried about the potential erosion of the land abutting upper Cheslatta Falls.

"It's been bad for several years, and it's gotten worse over the last two years," he said.

"I'm in a position where we can't be really critical because it's somewhat of a natural phenomenon this year, and the flows are necessary, but it definitely causes us concern with these flows," said Robertson.

In his opinion, "I guess one thing we can say is if they [Alcan] were to put in the cold water release at Kenney Dam, we wouldn't have to put up with this, because the Kenney Dam release facility would allow these flows to be released through the Kenney Dam instead of at Cheslatta."

"So I guess our point is, this is a good example of why we need that cold water release."

Robertson said that Skins Lake spillway is Alcan's "only discharge.

Robertson pointed out that "Alcan is working with us to establish a benchmark down at Cheslatta Lake, which would allow us to monitor the elevation of the lake, So that's something we are working together on."

"A benchmark is an elevation site that has the exact elevation. That way we can monitor the surface of Cheslatta Lake," he said.

Robertson said, "The runoff hasn't even started yet.The runoff typically starts heavy in the end of May, June."

"The big concern is the Nechako Reservoir being able to accept the normal runoff but it's not normal this year, [because of the heavy snowpack], it's 150 per cent of normal," he said.

Cheslatta senior policy advisor Mike Robertson said, "Regarding the high water, we were approached by a number of residents here locally who have concerns with the potential for flooding."

"So, Cheslatta Carrier Nation on their own went out and purchased 2000 sandbags.Alcan matched that number," said Robertson.

"Southside Firehall is looking after distribution of sandbags," he said.
