"We're excited about this unique partnership that will bring attention to nature in an urban setting while also increasing the access to recreational opportunities for all of our residents, especially for those who live in or near downtown," said Wayne A. Roberts, executive director of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department.

This will be Ohio's first Audubon Center to be located in the heart of an urban area. The Center's programming will be based on the needs of the community and will be developed through community outreach.Emphasis will be placed on reaching out to those audiences currently underserved by environmental education programs, including the many diverse communities located within the near south planning area of the city.

The Audubon Center on the Whittier Peninsula is a cornerstone of Audubon's 2020 Vision, a national environmental education initiative to create a network of Audubon Centers across the country that provide children and others with direct experiences in nature.Through programs that encourage hands-on discovery and learning, Audubon Centers help visitors better understand the natural world around them, and inspire a passion for taking care of it.
