   In Utah, the Ellis R. Shipp Clinic serves a diverse population of women who "don't have an avenue into traditional health services," according to Leissa Roberts, CNM, MS, who is the executive director of faculty practice at the University of Utah College of Nursing.
   
   In 2000, Roberts and others working with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, established the Ellis R. Shipp Clinic in West Valley City for the purpose of providing medical services for women who are uninsured, underinsured, undocumented or otherwise unable to obtain access to health care. "Many of our patients are Hispanic. Others come from Africa, China, the Mid-East and other distant locations," says Roberts. Clinic fees are calculated on a sliding scale.

   "We ask about diapers, wipes, shirts, bathing, breast-feeding and all the other things new mothers will have to know that they may not have thought about yet," Roberts explains.

   In 2000 Leissa developed an obstetrical triage program at University of Utah Hospital that quickly moved from a 2 bed unit to a 4 bed unit. Leissa is also interested in quality outcomes and helped develop the current ACNM bench marking tool. She and a colleague also developed a relational database in Access to create an automated birth log.
