   According to Larry Roberts , Eurocopter's marketing manager for law enforcement , the company is very strong in this segment because of its ability to offer quiet-technology helicopters with very attractive direct operating costs.. Moreover , Eurocopter's commitment to improving customer support is viewed as a contributing factor to wider acceptance in all market segments.
   
   Although Eurocopter has a wide range of helicopters to offer , Roberts believes that the EC-120 , AS-350B-3 and the EC-135 will have the most lasting effect on airborne law enforcement. This summer , the New York Police Department is debating whether to switch its longtime allegiance from Bell Helicopter to Eurocopter.
   
   The EC-120 Colibri , a light single , is the focus of the company's efforts in the North American law enforcement market. Powered by a 504 shp Turbomeca Arrius 2F engine , the helicopter can reach a cruising speed in excess of 120 knots or conduct operations for more than four hours at 65 knots.

   Roberts says law enforcement agencies will find the AS-350B-3 AStar attractive primarily for its improved power and good hot-and-high performance. Powered by a Turbomeca Arriel 2B engine with FADEC , the AStar is capable of cruising at 140 knots. As proof of the AStar's popularity , Roberts notes U.S. Customs' expressed desire to increase its fleet of AS-350s from 21 to 33 aircraft over the next three years. He says both the EC-135 and EC-120 offer advantages over their competitors because the aircraft give you quiet technology without sacrificing tailrotor authority..
   
   Despite a lack of evidence indicating that twin engine helicopters are safer to operate than their single-engine counterparts , Eurocopter is prepared to take advantage of the perception that two engines are safer than one. Specifically , the EC-135 , coupled with the AS-355 Twin Star , have positioned Eurocopter to meet what the company views as an expanding market for twins.
   
   Eurocopter also offers a wide range of light and intermediate helicopters that are in use with a number of law-enforcement agencies worldwide. While the BO-105 , BK-117 and various iterations of the Dauphin do not dominate the market , they have managed to log significant time in police roles.

   According to Larry Roberts, Eurocopter's marketing manager of law enforcement, the company has seen a huge jump in orders already this year, with an increase of about 40% compared to last year. The company's most popular models for law enforcement are the EC-120, AS-350 B3, EC-155B, AS-355N, as well as the popular AS-365 N3. Roberts notes, "Many operators of military surplus helicopters are upgrading their fleets."
   
   Roberts says that contacts from agencies have increased dramatically in recent months. Eurocopter customizes its helicopters to individual needs and specifications, with most agencies asking for thermal capabilities, Nightsun, multi-band radios, downlink microwave video, and hoists.
   
   The U.S. Border Patrol recently signed a contract for 13 additional AStars for the Southwest and Northeast patrol regions. Ten will be delivered this year, and the remaining three by March 2003.
