For OSU philosophy professor Lani Roberts, that message will be easier to get across in light of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.

"When we are in peace we are oblivious to the violence," she said."Now we understand living in violence, and now is the time to make people aware."

Roberts, who is housing a member of the pilgrimage overnight, is the co-founder of OSU Faculty for Peace and Justice. After 30 years as a peace activist, she says this walk fulfills a necessity for everybody.

"We are in desperate need of reminders that there are alternatives to kill because we all want peace," she said."We just go about it in different ways."

Following Cassimjee, Leroy Jones and Lani Roberts spoke, providing government, corporate and academic perspectives on applying truth and reconciliation concepts here in the U.S. Roberts went well beyond the academic perspective to share crucial insights from her classes.
    ...
From the academic perspective, Lani Roberts, a philosophy teacher at Oregon State University for the past ten years, teaches courses in moral theory and the Ethics of Diversity (part of a Difference, Power and Discrimination requirement).
    ...
Many students tell Roberts that they were raised in families that have taught them that: (1) all people are equal and deserving of respect; (2) race is only skin deep, in other words, we are all humans, none better than another; and (3) whatever they have accomplished, it is because they have earned it.
    ...
To this end, Roberts begins each course with a wonderful work written by Philip Hallie called "From Cruelty to Goodness."
    ...
In the writing assignment accompanying this article, Roberts asks students to tell her precisely and exactly how they can give up several of their privileges and ask them to use their knowledge and awareness to list privileges they have beyond those listed by McIntosh.
