Lafayette Regional Airport Director Greg Roberts' six-month contract will be ready for acceptance by the airport commission before this afternoon's meeting, according to commission Chairman Carroll Robichaux.
    ...
At last month's meeting, where Roberts faced possible termination, Commissioner Don Higginbotham proposed the contract (Roberts is currently an at-will employee) and a second resolution that would allow for the position to be advertised nationally three months before its December expiration.

Aviation Director Greg Roberts provided the information requested in a July 13 letter, but in a format in which we were unable to match employees with their salaries.

On Aug. 22, The Daily Advertiser submitted a second public records request that specified the format we desired.Roberts responded with a voice mail message saying he was checking with Aiport Commission attorneys about a possible Homeland Security risk.

Louisiana Revised Statute 44:32, Louisiana's public records law, states that the custodian of a record who questions whether information is public must explain in writing within three days of the request why he believes the document is not public and cite a legal reference which he believes exempts that record from public review.

To date, The Daily Advertiser has received no correspondence from the Airport Commission or Roberts about the matter.

On Friday, Roberts said after the attorney reviewed our request it was sent to the commission for consideration.Roberts said a letter was in the mail inviting a representative of The Daily Advertiser to attend the next commission meeting on Sept. 7 to explain why the newspaper needs the information.
    ...
"The question is the format," Roberts said.
    ...
Roberts declined to explain on Friday how matching employee names with titles and salaries could constitute a Homeland Security risk.

Photographs of airport staff and commissioners are posted on the Lafayette Regional Airport web site.
    ...
Only two were considered large enough to make our list: Roberts, who earns $91,460 a year, and Deputy Director of Aviation F. Jason Devillier, $60,751.

The Airport Commission voted five-to-one Thursday to retain Roberts, who was asked by three commissioners just weeks ago to resign, retire or face possible termination.

A tug of war ensued among commissioners in recent weeks, with influential officials and citizens weighing in.The battle of influence came to a head during Thursday's meeting.

Roberts and the commission have been under fire for improper spending on meals, travel and other items, but they were cleared by the legislative auditor and district attorney.Commission Chairman Carroll Robichaux said the attempt to fire Roberts was not based on the audit but on a history of arrogance toward customers and staff.
    ...
"I will definitely not agree with that," said Commissioner Brenda Burley who cast the only vote to fire Roberts.
    ...
State Director of Aviation Phil Jones, who wrote a letter on state stationary asking City-Parish President Joey Durel to use his influence to support Roberts, was one of five people asking the commission Thursday to retain Roberts.
    ...
The squabbling and lack of support for Roberts by the commission is making it difficult to convince the Federal Aviation Administration to invest more money at Lafayette Regional Airport, Jones said.

"The future progress of the airport is being put in jeopardy," he said.
    ...
Two weeks ago, four commissioners discussed firing Roberts, he said.
