Wireless Week - LNP Derby Takes Off With A Whimper - [Cached Version]
Published on: 12/1/2003    Last Visited: 12/5/2003

"Everybody would say, 'boy, what a big challenge,' but what I say is we've been doubling every year for the past five," says Greg Roberts, Neustar's vice president of numbering service."So we have been very experienced in scaling our systems."

Just to be safe, Neustar sized its system for a 600-percent increase, raising capacity to upwards of 360 million transactions. That should be more than enough to handle the forecasted 13 million wireless LNP transactions through the end of the year, assuming one out of every 10 wireless users switches providers in the five-week period between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31.

Other than the increase in volume, the interfaces between Neustar's system and the wireless carriers already exist, because they are the same used to assign available phone numbers to new users. But Neustar has beefed up its staff and set up a control central group that will provide a report every morning on the status of the LNP systems and any performance issues "mainly because there has been a lot of buzz in the industry about it," Roberts says.
