On February 20, authorities say Massachusetts insurance executive Gregory D. Roberts attempted to pass through an airport weapons detection machine with a knife in his shoe. After being detected, Roberts told authorities the pocket knife was an heirloom and he did not want it confiscated.Roberts was charged with a felony and made an appearance in federal court in Madison.
Sources close to this investigation say Roberts will be fined five thousand dollars and receive a federal citation as a result of the plea bargain.Dane County Regional Airport Commission member, County Supervisor Darold Lowe, is critical of this planned plea arrangement."If it was originally a felony and this took place after September 11th, this fine and any probation is not an appropriate penalty," Lowe said.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Madison and an attorney for Roberts refused to discuss specifics of the plea bargain.
