Named after well-known mathematics teacher Emma Roberson, the then-state-of-the-art school was the first Granbury campus built on the south side of Granbury. On opening day in September 1985, 557 kindergarten through fourth-graders invaded the halls with mud-covered feet. The road to the school as well as the school's landscaping had yet to be complete.

The bond plan included building Emma Roberson, adding 20 new classrooms at the high school and building a "spectator-type" (James Wann Sports Center) at GHS. The voters overwhelmingly approved the package by a 2 to 1 margin, Hood County News archives reported. Roberson, who died in 1990 at the age of 84, was considered by many to be one of the most popular teachers in Granbury school history. She was born in Dublin in 1906 and attended Carlton High School in Hamilton County. The stern, but fair educator went on to attend North Texas State and received her teaching certificate in 1938. She continued her education and later received her master's degree from Texas Christian University in 1950.

Roberson taught for 45 years with 28 years of service in Granbury. She also taught classes at Wilson Alexander, Seagraves, deCordova Bend and Mambrino. When she retired in 1971, Roberson was head of the mathematics department at Granbury High School. Mrs. Roberson had a deep concern for her students. When a group of GHS students wanted the school to offer a trigonometry and physics class, she volunteered to teach the classes, but only after taking engineering classes at night at TCU. "The citizens and school children of Granbury are richer from her (Roberson's) service, dedication and influence in the Granbury Independent School District," said then-GISD superintendent James Wann at the school's dedication in March 1986.
    ...
Roberson was floored by the Granbury School Board's move to name a school after her.
    ...
Williams was also a former student of Roberson's. "But when you left her class you loved her to death." Roberson was laid to rest in Granbury Cemetery next to her husband, Clyde, a well-known Granbury barber. Emma Roberson Elementary was the first school named after a Granbury educator since Decker Gym in 1949.
    ...
The 36-year drought of honoring educators ended with Roberson and continued during the next two years when the James Wann Sports Center was named after the late James Wann in 1986 and Nettie Baccus Elementary was named after the retired Granbury principal/teacher Nettie Baccus in 1987.
