"The Court of First Instance has allowed the Commission wide discretion in its economic analysis of antitrust cases, and only if there is a fundamental error such as a violation of procedural rights can such claims be brought," he added.

The news comes after Hammonds last year persuaded Brussels chief Konstantinos Adamantopoulos to remain at the firm despite earlier handing in his resignation alongside Rivas and Borovikov.

The announcement comes a week after Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw hired trade law specialist Edward Borovikov, who resigned from Hammonds together with Rivas and Brussels office head Konstantinos Adamantopoulos in the summer.
