John A. Rickard

JOHN A. RICKARD, AIA, PE, - VICE PRESIDENT John Rickard has been involved in design and construction for over thirty years. He holds degrees in architecture and engineering, the latter with an emphasis in construction management, and is licensed as both an architect and engineer. He has held positions with both owners and general contractors, and his civil engineering experience includes serving as County Engineer for Travis County. He was a founding partner of Pi Architects, having sold his interest after ten successful years of specializing in healthcare design. Besides his position with Olicon, he also teaches engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and spends several weeks a year conducting Life Safety Code assessments at U.S. Army hospitals such as Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. A registered accessibility specialist since the inception of the program, he provides expert witness reports and testimony regarding accessibility and construction issues. He also currently chairs a technical committee for the National Fire Protection Association.

John Rickard (now VP of Olicon) worked with Daniel Consulting, the Country's preeminent Life Safety Code and JCAHO expert, to identify non-compliant conditions for the JCAHO Statement of Conditions and prepare the JCAHO Plan For Improvement to ensure accreditation.

John Rickard (now Olicon's lead architect) designed a building with numerous sustainability features using healthy building (low VOC and formaldehyde-free products), recycling (fly ash, carpet and gypsum board), and energy saving (solar shading, energy recovery ventilator, insulation and solar photovoltaic panels) techniques.

John Rickard is a founding principal of Pi Architects & Engineers, Inc. and is a registered architect and engineer in the state of Texas.In addition, John is an adjunct professor in the architectural engineering program at The University of Texas at Austin and is the architect/engineer representative to the Texas Department of Human Services Advisory Committee on Assisted Living Facilities.

John believes in encouraging his clients' involvement from project planning through construction to ensure functional, economic, and code requirements are all given appropriate consideration.To that end, he assists the client in preparing a detailed functional program, and conducts a thorough assessment of the various codes and licensing requirements for the project, combining his own findings with those of the client's staff and consultants.He then focuses on identifying innovative solutions to functional and/or code issues emphasizing either immediate or long-term cost savings, depending on the client's particular needs.

John is an active member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is an ICBO-certified Accessibility/Usability Specialist.He maintains a detailed knowledge of a number of codes, including NFPA 101 Life Safety Code; ADA and Texas Accessibility Standards; several model building codes; and numerous State of Texas healthcare and nursing standards.
