Having a dependable broadband connection is essential to Incapital's business, said Joe Rickard, chief technology officer.The Loop-based firm has been worried since rains flooded the basement of its building a few years ago, washing out its communications lines.

The wireless service works as expected, Rickard said.If that continues, Incapital will probably drop one of its two wired Internet connections and increase the amount of bandwidth purchased from TowerStream.

"The cost is competitive," Rickard said, "but that's not something we even care about.We were looking for an alternative to assure business continuity."

Incapital uses its TowerStream connection for data communications only, but the firm could add Internet telephony and may do so in the future, Rickard said.

Joe is responsible for the technology infrastructure of the organization.His background includes co-founding the order routing service bureau InterMarket Systems, Inc., which became ISI Systems Group after being acquired by ABN AMRO in 1992.Joe went on to co-found Ganymede, an Internet Service Provider and web development firm, where he developed the DirectNotes web site for the GMAC SmartNotesSM offering.Other firms where Joe had direct project involvement included First Options of Chicago, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade, Knight/Trimark and Alahli.com (National Commercial Bank), the largest consumer bank in the Middle East.Joe joined Incapital after selling Ganymede to publicly traded Homecom Communications.

In 1995, Joe Rickard, a principal and vice-president of marketing at Ganymede Corp., a Chicago Web page developer and Internet service provider, sat down with his two partners to formalize their business and create a document with which to raise capital. Simply creating a mission statement took three separate meetings, recalls Mr. Rickard, who had previously worked as an investment banker and read countless business plans. "We had to take a hard look at our resources . . . budgets and timelines," says Mr. Rickard. That process helps "find and define" your company, he says.
