Following in the tradition of Gross are Jennifer Rickard, a 1997 LHU graduate who is the editor of The Daily Times of Salisbury, Md., and LHU student Daniella De Luca.

Rickard, who started as a reporter at The Daily Times a month after graduation as business editor, became a Sunday shift leader and page one designer the following year, Kline said.

In 1999, Rickard took the position of editorial page editor while continuing her responsibilities for the business page.She also has served in the role of assistant features editor and designed "Style" section covers and the Sunday "Discovery" science and travel section.In 2001, she returned to news design as part of a three-person team charged with redesigning nine weekly newspapers in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia for the Gannett group.Rickard became news editor of The Daily Times, which circulates around 30,000, in 2001, and she has continued her professional development at the American Press Institute and the Society for News Design's annual convention.
Kline recalled Rickard as a student, noting that Rickard always assisted other students with news writing, pagination and Associated Press Style while Rickard was an editor for the Eagle Eye, LHU's student newspaper.

Rickard was a business writer, features editor and eventually news editor at the student newspaper, and she worked for the university's public relations office and served as a student assistant to the president.
After receiving the award, Rickard noted that even though the hours are long, she thoroughly enjoys her job, especially when the paper is tackling a big news event that requires a team effort.
"In working at a newspaper, no day is the same," Rickard said."You get a fresh start every day."
Rickard gave some advice to future journalists.
"Get involved in everything that you can as a start, whether it is the Eagle Eye, an internship or Havenscope (LHU's student broadcasting club)," Rickard said.
It is important to have some experience when applying for a job.Having a byline on news clips from the Eagle Eye is a good place to start, she said.
"Research your options," Rickard said."Keep up with them and coverage trends."
Becoming well-rounded is important, she said.It helps to be familiar with mathematics, a second language and graphic design in order to have more job options, she noted.
"Paying attention to detail is important," Rickard said.
