St. Paul's Cathedral in London, where he led the university's Chapel Singers, is the most famous venue he has performed in, he said.

"I've been so cloistered at the University of Redlands, I'm going to find out more about that," he said.

He also plans to pursue some more physical activities."I like to play golf.I've just rediscovered my clubs," he said.

And he joined a health club "so I can get my body in some sort of shape to be able to do that. And I hope to be able to go sailing. So it isn't going to be all sitting behind a piano or an organ -- get out there and get some exercise," he said.

Jeff Rickard has said the last word of his "long goodbye" to a 38-year career at the University of Redlands.
    ...
You also know that Jeff Rickard has conducted the university's annual Christmas service, the Feast of Lights, ever since 1970, that he retired from his teaching and choral conducting at the university at the end of this school year and that he received an honorary doctor of sacred music degree at commencement May 24.

He also was the speaker for the College of Arts and Sciences commencement, and with that speech said his last official goodbye.

The year of goodbyes began with the Feast of Lights in December, the last he would direct.
    ...
I'm not sure I have the words to describe the joy of singing in the midst of that group of about 150 Chapel Singers, from those who sang with Jeff when he was a student at Redlands in the 1960s, to his first students from the 1970s and on through the '80s and '90s and this year's students.
    ...
After we had sung the last notes of "God be with you till we meet again," many of us with tears in our eyes, Jeff said quietly to the choir, "Thanks be to God for you and these wonderful 38 years."
    ...
After every name was called and every student walked across the stage to receive a diploma, after the closing of commencement with the singing of the "Alma Mater," Jeff stepped forward and led one more chant. Not anything medieval or monastic but a spirited yell of "Och Tamale gazolly gazump, dayump dayadee yahoo" and on to the last "Rah, Rah, Redlands!"of the university's 1920s chant.

And now that the long goodbye is over, what comes next?

The first thing that came next was the Community Chorus' annual Family Music Festival of folksongs, spirituals and Americana, the day after commencement.

Among other things, Jeff will continue to direct the Community Chorus, which he founded in 1979, and now that he's retired, he is making plans to take the Community Chorus in new directions.
