John Richards was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on November 17 th, 1951. He studied art and education at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Victoria, earning a B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan. John taught primary school for four years, then spent eight years teaching art at ahigh school in northern Manitoba before moving to Nelson, B.C. in 1988. He presently resides near Balfour, a small community on Kootenay Lake in the B.C. interior.

"Upon examining some local soapstone from the Duncan Valley, I discovered that within each piece of stone there were many exciting and beautiful forms. My role as an artist is to reveal a few of these forms."

John also works with pen and ink and colored pencils. His 15 years in northern Canada working with Native Canadians is a major influence on his work.

John is our Head of Investment Management in Private Client Services. He joined Anderson Strathern in 1998 from a leading firm of stockbrokers, where he was a director. He gained the S.I. Diploma in 1989 and shortly afterwards was elected as an individual member of the International Stock Exchange - London. John was awarded the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate in 1998. He also gained in 2003, the Securities & Investment Institute's Certificate in Derivatives. He has many years of investment management experience, particularly on a discretionary basis.

John heads the Investment Department, which aims to provide a comprehensive portfolio management service and independent advice to private clients, trusts and charities. He was involved in the implementation of our portfolio management system, as well as the regulatory authority change from the Law Society of Scotland to the Financial Services Authority. John is also a Fellow of the Securities & Investment Institute and a member of the Personal Finance Society.
