John Richards, deputy head of the European Commission's Washington office is on record as saying that the USDA was "unable to give us assurances" that StarLink corn would not be found in corn products exported to Europe."We remain concerned about the situation," Richardson said.If StarLink corn was found in processed food exports to Europe, "we'd have an even bigger problem" concerning agricultural trade with the United States, he added."The system is something other than foolproof," Richardson said, referring to U.S. regulation of biotech foods. Now StarLink is showing up in Japan, where the GM variety is not even approved for animal feed, sending shock waves through importers in Japan and other Asian countries such as South Korea and Taiwan.Japan imports 15-16 million tonnes of corn per year for food and feed, mostly from the United States, and South Korea buys about eight million tonnes. In other words, it pays to listen to your customers and to give them what they want in the first place - before you are forced to do it and maybe lose your shirt later on.Tyson's pro-active move should be an example to all of us in the food chain.I'm not bashing genetic modification - just the arrogance that dictates that the supplier knows better than the customer.

John Richards, deputy head of the European Commission`s Washington office, met Monday with USDA officials who did little to allay his concerns.

Richards said the USDA was ``unable to give us assurances`` StarLink corn would not be found in corn products exported to Europe.

The EU governments voted one year ago to require labels on foods containing genetically modified ingredients.Several other big food importers - including Japan and Britain - have adopted similar restrictions.

``We remain concerned about the situation, `` Richardson said.

If StarLink corn was found in processed-food exports to Europe, ``we`d have an even bigger problem`` concerning agricultural trade with the United States, he added.

Freeland -- Author John Stuart "Stu" Richards, will discuss and sign copies of his new book Death in the Mines: Disasters and Rescues in the Anthracite Coal Fields of Pennsylvania at the upcoming Eckley Miners' Village Charters Day Celebration.Eckley Miners' Village Associates is hosting this event on Sunday, March 11 from noon to 5 p.m.The free program is open to the public.

According to Eckley Museum Director Bill Strassner, Richards will talk about hard coal tragedies that, since the 1870s, have claimed the lives of more than 30,000 men and boys who toiled underground in the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania. The constant threat of fire, explosion, collapsed rock and deadly gas brought miners face to face with death on a daily basis.Sometimes they survived; many times they did not.

Through original journal and newspaper accounts, Richards' Death in the Mines revisits Appalachian Anthracite Pennsylvania's most notorious mining accidents and rescue attempts from 1869 to 1943.From the fire at Avondale Colliery that resulted in the first law for regulation and inspection of mines, to the gas explosion at Lytle Mine in Primrose that killed 14 men, Richards reveals multiple facets of one of Pennsylvania's most dangerous occupations.

Richards, whose family has worked in the mines since 1870, offers a startling yet sensitive tribute to an industry and occupation that is often overlooked and underappreciated, Strassner said.
