   The idea was the brainchild of Ruth Ricciarelli, Director of Workforce Development for the Hospital Association of Rhode Island."HARI's Health Partnership Council (HPC) is committed to advancing the many exciting health care career opportunities available to young people," she explained."While we have been able to arrange numerous individual student and teacher internships in our area hospitals, this is the first time we have used interactive television technology to expose students to the exciting world of the hospital operating room.When we approached Kent Hospital with the idea, they immediately embraced it.We'll actually offer virtual job shadowing from the classroom to the hospital operating room using live, two-way video transmitted via the internet."
   
   Ricciarelli came up with the idea when her husband David became a candidate for rotator cuff surgery.

   "There is a terrible, terrible shortage of health care workers," said Ruth Ricciarelli, director of work force development for the Hospital Association of R.I., which is in the second year of its "Educators Extern" program.
   
   The concept of the program is simple.Hospitals educate high school science teachers about health care careers, who then educate students, who then visit hospitals -- to see for themselves if they might want to work there.
   
   That explains the 11 Warwick Veterans Memorial High School students who visited Newport Hospital yesterday.

   Rhode Island is the only state in the country with a high school externship program designed specifically for the health care industry, according to Ricciarelli.Participating teachers receive professional development credit recognized by the Department of Education.
   
   Last year, 11 teachers and their students participated in the program.This year there were 20 teachers, which is good.

   In Rhode Island, 10 percent of registered nurse positions are already vacant, according to Ricciarelli, who adds that similar shortages apply for technicians and pharmacists.
   
   Hence this pilot program.
   
   "It all comes down to what a worker needs to know to be an effective health care worker in Rhode Island," Ricciarelli said."We are trying to provide educators with that answer."
   
   Students do have questions about health care careers.Often the answers are best found in a health care setting.
