Susana Ricaurte, , Coordinator of MANRECUR II Project in El Carchi, Ecuador, sent this message to InfoAndina, the Latin American node of the Mountain Forum, as response to a request for a special edition of InfoAndina in behalf of the International Earth Day. The message illustrates the efforts to celebrate the International Earth Day by local communities in the Watershed of El Angel.
On 22 April we celebrate the "International Earth Day." Near 150 countries have gradually joined this initiative in order to develop activities in behalf of the planet, since in 1970, when the date was established in the United States. There is an increasing need to join this efforts because of the constant attacks to the life of the planet by the alterations induced by the inadequate utilization of the natural resources, which caused undesired effects such as the greenhouse effect, the destruction of the ozone layer, the deforestation and the pollution of soils and water, which presents a terrible scenario of systematic destruction of the environment. -
