"People are searching for comfort and looking for answers in a time like this and often come to church to find those answers, even when they normally don't attend," said Linda Rhodes, director of communications for the Virginia Annual (regional) Conference.
    ...
"It was interesting that those (messages) ... were selected because they're certainly very appropriate now," Rhodes said.

The Lenten media campaign also established an advertising presence in the Roanoke District that enabled the church to respond quickly and place new spots soon after the shootings.Rhodes said the Roanoke District and Virginia Conference are working aggressively with United Methodist Communications to purchase more media placements for the spots.

"We think it's a very powerful message, and we want to reach out to as many people as we can who were affected by this tragedy and are truly hurting," she said.

The fact that the antenna would bring funds to the church is an appealing point in its favor, said Linda Rhodes, director of communications for the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Rhodes said she wishes her church in Naperville would take that route.

"My personal opinion is it's smart," she said."Nobody said Christians are supposed to check their brains at the door."

"(The cross) is a symbol, it is not sacred in and of itself. There is all kinds of steel, cement and brick holding up the cross. This is just another piece of metal."

Looking up, I saw Linda Rhodes, Communications Director for the Northern Illinois Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was photographing me with a large camera, exclaiming, "You document everybody else, I'm going to document you!"

Not wishing to escalate things, I responded, "Okay, but I'm not all that photogenic."She replied, "That's true!"When I suggested that perhaps we had found a point of agreement, this woman who had never met me snapped back that it was likely our "only" point of agreement. As she checked her digital camera, I asked how the pictures turned out.She frowned and said, "You still look the same!"

A few weeks later, the official newsletter of the Northern Illinois Annual Conference carried a full-page editorial denouncing me, complete with a photo of my apparently menacing face.Rhodes complained about how "this blatant enemy of everything Bishop Sprague has stood for throughout his ministry ‘crashed' this final farewell for the Bishop's friends and family."
    ...
Sadly, the responses of Rhodes and Winkler seem to be typical of how "progressive" church officials and activists respond to IRD.
