John Rhoades became the Merced College Police Department's first certified officer since the Sheriff's Department took over the college's law enforcement program in January.
Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin pinned Rhoades with his new badge Monday, and the officer immediately began patrol duty at the campus, said sheriff's Deputy B.J. Jones, law enforcement manager for the college.

The campus Police Department consists of Jones, Rhoades, seven security officers who handle parking and vehicle code enforcement on the campus, and two clerical workers, Jones said.
Rhoades started his relationship with the Sheriff's Department when, at age 13, he became an Explorer Scout.After graduating from Merced High, Rhoades worked as a security officer and police reserve officer at the college before enrolling at the Ray Simon Criminal Justice Center in Modesto, completing Police Officers Standard of Training courses.
