He started a business in the mid-1980s selling solar panels and solar-powered water heaters. Not only that, but he retrofitted his whole house with solar for heat and hot water.

Because the efficiency was lower that it is today and his house was partially shaded by tall oak trees, sleeping over at Jay's became an exercise in indoor camping.Their big, old Victorian was always freezing.

Erik Rhey, a senior editor at PC Magazine, said that as technology becomes ubiquitous, baby boomers and older generations are being forced to adapt, just as senior citizens have increasingly been using e-mail.

"I remember hearing a few years ago that hip-hop and rap is the only cultural media that's brought anything new to the American lexicon," said Mr. Rhey, whose magazine published an article in June that listed a bunch of increasingly popular, cryptic acronyms.
    ...
Such acronyms started becoming popular in the late 1990s, when Internet users began using applications such as AOL's Instant Messenger that were able to run all the time, Mr. Rhey said.

In 2003 and 2004, the shorthand spread to cell phones as the devices became more sophisticated and texting was not relegated to BlackBerrys and Palm Pilots.

A couple of years ago, cell phone providers started making integrated devices that included full keyboards and offering unlimited text messaging plans, Mr. Rhey said.

Therefore, most of today's teens hardly knew a world without LOL and BRB, never mind the longer acronyms they have since coined.

"Slang, in a way, was almost invented to dupe people who don't understand it, particularly the older generations," Mr. Rhey said.
