    Artur Reimann has spent most of his professional life working with COBOL.First introduced to COBOL in 1962 as an IBM employee in Cologne, Germany he held many positions of responsibility in developing the language both within IBM and as a member of ANSI and the ISO.

    Working in the IBM Field System Center in Stuttgart, from 1971 - 1982, one of Artur's responsibilities was support of COBOL in Germany.During this time Artur also worked on DB/DC and IMS and GIS.In 1978 Artur served as the German delegate of the ISO COBOL Working Group.

    Assigned to the IBM Santa Teresa Laboratory from 1982 - 1987 Artur was IBM's U.S. representative to X3J4 (later to become J4) the committee charged with defining COBOL 1985, one of the approved standards.From 1984 - 1987 Arthur had worldwide responsibility for the IBM Standards Project Authority for COBOL.He chaired the IBM COBOL Language Council and was instrumental in the first SAA COBOL CPI definition in 1986 and the implementation of IBM VS COBOL II, IBM's version of COBOL 85.

    Returning to work in the Field System Center from 1987 - 1994 Artur was responsible for support of both COBOL and PL/I for IBM Germany.He served as IBM's Guide representative for COBOL and PL/I.In residency for brief periods at San Jose, California in 1993 and 1994 Artur co-authored the "Redbook" publication of CODE/370 and worked with Micro Focus Workbench, co-authoring another "Redbook."

    After a brief period of retirement Artur rejoined X3J4 (J4) in 1996 as a representative of Fujitsu Software Corporation.Artur is actively involved in establishing the next revision of the COBOL standard, COBOL 2002.

    In addition to serving as a member of J4, Artur does COBOL consulting and education and is an internationally regarded speaker.He is particularly interested in the object-orientd extensions to COBOL.Artur lives in Gaertringen, a small town close to Stuttgart.He can be reached at reimann@attglobal.net.
