If the hon. Gentleman does not mind, I want to get on.If he has any telling or pressing points, we can discuss them outside the House or he can write to me.

I urge the Minister and his Department to pay close attention over the coming months to this unfolding issue and, in particular, to the principles that I have outlined: equity of access and of standards.
    ...
I sincerely congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Copeland (Mr. Reed)

on securing this debate. He has not been in this House for long, but he has already established himself as a powerful advocate for his local community and as a voice on health issues in particular. It was in one of my first debates as a Front Bencher that I heard his contribution to the debate about dentistry.

In the two years since Jamie Reed has been an MP he has asked 245 questions of ministers about issues both international and those that affect us much closer to home in Copeland. Egremont Today intends to bring you an occasional column with a taster of what our MP has been asking Ministers, statements he has made in Parliament or what he's been involved in locally. If you want to read the detailed answers from Ministers either ask Jamie Reed's office or go to www.theyworkforyou.com where there are links to Hansard, the official record of what happens in Parliament. But we do expect our politicians to answer our every question and to act for us on a truly wide range of topics. Going back to my trawl over the last two years I see that our MP has been taxing ministers on all those sort of things that we feel strongly about. For example following the disastrous opening up of the ground and what could have been the loss of a couple of bungalows he sought to find out exactly what sort of compensation would be available for people affected by old mine workings. More recently he thanked the Prime Minister publicly for his support for nuclear energy and the importance this has not only for our efforts to reduce global warming but also for the families of the many thousands of people who work at Sellafield. He also put questions to ministers about the extent to which the UK government is funding education, health care and clean water in developing countries. This would be of particular interest to all those parents and children who have been involved in the ground breaking Copeland - Rungwe link which operates out of West Cumbria. Agriculture is integral to our part of the world and our MP has urged ministers to work with the NFU to mitigate the financial effects of the delay in the single payment scheme. One of Jamie Reed's speeches this year in Parliament was a very detailed analysis of what was necessary to maintain a decent standard of health provision in West Cumbria. He pointed out in his speech the need for consultant led maternity services and that an area like ours needs to have special provision made because of our unique geographical position. He pointed out the strength of feeling within the community and that NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) had made it clear that while midwife led units were cheaper consultant led units were more cost-effective. Well it seems that the powers that be have listened to us and our MP and our new hospital will have both an A&E department as well as a consultant led maternity unit. As you can see from the picture above Jamie Reed and his family have made good use of our current facility and we are glad to say mother and child are doing well. We are deeply indebted to Mike McKenzie for the beautiful photo of Claire, Jamie and Joseph.

JAMIE Reed has been named as the government’s deputy minister for the North West, The Whitehaven News can reveal.

Although the region takes in Greater Manchester and Merseyside as well as Lancashire and Cumbria, Copeland’s MP hopes his new role will give a stronger voice to West Cumbria and a boost to the area’s economic development.

Mr Reed said yesterday: “I’m looking forward to helping the regional economy to grow â€" this can only be good for West Cumbria.

Quite frankly Jamie Reed's response in The Whitehaven News last week was weak at the best!
    ...
The extract states: "The MP claimed £8,640 in stamp duty and £3,943 in legal fees when he bought his £315,000 North London flat in May 2006 to use as his second home [Mr Reed disputes this quoted valuation of his flat, among other aspects - see Editor's Note at the end of this letter]. "He then submitted receipts worth £2,336 for two beds and two mattresses, but this was reduced to £1,000 by the fees office. In February 2007, the (fees) office told him: 'It is the policy of the department of finance and administration to reduce costs relating to beds if they are greater than the recommended maximum of £1,000.' It would appear that Mr Reed values his comfort very highly indeed. The statistics show his salary is £64,766; his Additional Costs Allowance totalled £22,568 (mortgage/rent £16,410, food £1,900, furniture/electrical £94 and other undisclosed items £4,164).
    ...
EDITOR'S NOTE: Mr Reed has said he did not try to claim but sought the advice of the Fees Office over whether he could claim for the beds for his north London flat. When they said the claim was excessive and reduced it to £1,000 he thanked them for their guidance and did not appeal against the decision. The flat is used by Mr Reed's parliamentary researcher which he says saves taxpayers' money by not having to pay for hotels. It was stated in The Daily Telegraph's summary that the MP's flat was bought for £315,000.

Jamie Reed called in at Millom School to talk to media students, took part in an assembly at Haverigg School and visited Millom Infant School nurture unit. The visits were part of a public surgery to find out the views of the town's residents. Mr Reed's spokesman Carl Carter said: "He really enjoyed it and the kids were really good. "He did a 20-minute interview with media students as part of their course. They asked him questions on underage drinking. "It was an opportunity to show Jamie the development of the schools and the different facilities they have.
