Jamey Reed, interim police chief for the City of Vienna, received information regarding one of the burglaries.Further investigation proved fruitful and a juvenile suspect was implicated in the burglary.

"Based on some of the items taken like Playstation and XBox 360 consoles and games, along with the manner in which the burglaries occurred we were led to believe there was juvenile involvement. We received information from one of the victim's relatives and that initially broke the case."

Reed said he made contact with one of the suspected juvenile burglars and his parents at the Vienna Police Department.During the interview the juvenile confessed to his part in all six of the burglaries.

The juvenile even went further and provided the department with the names of several other juveniles who were allegedly involved on various levels with some of the six reported burglaries.

A small portion of the stolen property has been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.

"We have not obtained all the stolen merchandise," Reed commented."Some of the items were destroyed or discarded. They were also passed between the homes of the suspects."

If anyone has any information concerning any burglary case within the city of Vienna or any other reported crime, they are asked to contact the Vienna Police Department at (229) 268-7033.All calls are strictly confidential, Reed says.

Some of my officers and myself were on a security detail at the high school football game, but officers working the streets were on the scene within one minute of being dispatched," said Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed.

Reed said a language difference may have given the suspect a jump on investigators.

"When I arrived at the scene I discovered there had been a communication barrier between the clerk and the first responding officer," Reed explained. "The clerk was unable to convey to the officer that a crime had occurred and he didn't seem to be under any duress or appear to be upset when the officer asked if everything was ok.

"Footage from the camera inside the store showed the officer telling the clerk he was there about the alarm call and asking if everything was ok," Reed added. "The clerk only nodded and didn't make any hand gestures depicting a gun, nor did he point to the cash register in an effort to let the officer know something was wrong. It wasn't until several minutes later when the owner of the store arrived that we found out there was indeed a robbery. This gave the suspect a significant head start on us."

Reed asked that anyone with pertinent information about the case call the Vienna Police Department at 229-268-7033. All calls will be kept strictly confidential, he said.

In the meantime, Reed is patting Officer Cal Scarborough on the back for making an arrest in four burglaries of the American Legion Hall located at 419 Coney Road. The first burglary took place in June of last year.

Scarborough charged a 15-year-old juvenile with burglary in the cases, where the goods stolen included money, beer, sodas and other items. Reed said information from an informant along with evidence recovered from a more recent burglary of the facility in August led Scarborough to question the juvenile.

Reed said the juvenile admitted his guilt to officers last Friday and was ordered detained by officials from the Cordele office of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

"The investigation continues and more arrests could result based on the information received to date," Reed said.

Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed reported Monday night to the council that he has been working to rectify the situation before it becomes worse.Reed told council members that a total of 15 notices were issued in September to residents concerning specific problems.

"Thus far, residents receiving the notices have complied within a timely manner and no citations have had to be issued," said Reed.
    ...
Royal has put together a running file system to track problem areas, Reed said.
    ...
Reed also submitted the Safe Schools/Healthy Students quarterly report, which was based on statistics taken from daily logs completed by each school resource officer. The report said there were 28 documented incidents of unlawful/unruly behavior at the Dooly County Middle School with one involving a weapon being brought onto school grounds. There were 21 reported incidents at Dooly County High, one involving drug activity and five in which arrests were made on various charges.

Police have also stepped up speed enforcement throughout the city which resulted in 48 citations being issued, Reed said, adding there were four vehicular accidents with no injuries in September.

The Vienna Police Department is also making themselves ready for the Big Pig Jig that is just a few weeks away, Reed reported. They are currently working with the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce to implement a new plan for structuring the security that will use fewer people than in the past.

"I have handpicked individual officers from outside our agency that I have confidence in to create a friendlier environment than in recent years," said Reed.

VIENNA — Conflict arose over mayoral duties at Monday night's city council meeting here when Mayor Emerson Lundy questioned the purchase of a used police cruiser by Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed.
    ...
Reed, who gives a monthly report to city council, addressed the issue in an attempt to enlighten everyone about the circumstances surrounding the purchase.

"The police department is in the process of eliminating some surplus vehicles that have become too costly to maintain," said Reed. "Those vehicles are sitting around collecting dust and deteriorating. We have a new hire coming on board very soon and another patrol car was necessary to accommodate the department's needs. It will allow us to have at least one spare vehicle in patrol-ready condition."

Reed went on to inform the mayor and council that there was already authorization for a new cruiser to be purchased in January of 2009. Reed said a sheriff in Hendry County, Fla. had lost his bid for re-election and had a black 2007 Dodge Charger he did not want the new sheriff to get. The cruiser is already fully equipped with lights, siren, and radio and had been traded to Brannen Motor Company in Unadilla.

Reed said the total price for the Charger was $18,950. He informed council that he had a quote, also from Brannen, on a new Crown Victoria like the ones currently in use by the department. The quote for the Crown Victoria was $28,285. The purchase of the Charger saves taxpayers almost $10,000 and payment for the vehicle is not due until January 2009 when it was originally approved for, Reed said.

Pedro Gomez, age 22 of 409 3rd Street Extension, died from wounds sustained in the accident that occurred near the 400 block of South 3rd Street shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday, according to information provided by Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed.
    ...
Reed said the train operator was not at fault and Gomez's blood alcohol content measured .316 — nearly four times the legal limit for drivers.

"No one was at fault here except for the victim," Reed said, adding Gomez was thrown approximately 10 feet when the train struck.
    ...
Reed said an officer transported Gomez's 13-year-old brother to Crisp Regional Hospital, where authorities with the Department of Family and Childrens Services provided counseling.
    ...
Reed said he was not sure if the two brothers were legal residents of the United States, but he thought the rest of the victim's family resided in Mexico.

Vienna Police Chief Jamey Reed said arrest warrants will be requested for Wilson this morning on three counts: criminal trespass on school grounds, disruption of schools, and interference with child custody.
    ...
It had been previously reported that an Amber alert was issued in connection to the case, but Reed said that only a BOLO was put out.He said he and Vienna investigators were fairly sure the case was more of a child-custody matter and not a kidnapping, but he alerted area law enforcement authorities in case Wilson tried to leave the immediate area with the children.

The three children were back in school in Dooly County Wednesday, Reed added.
