Dr. James Reed, CEO of Northeast Health, will be president.
    ...
Boyle, Reed, and their boards have been holding informal discussions for more than a year.
    ...
Reed said that including Seton in the affiliation "allows us to get our hands around the right-sizing of health care in Troy. What do we really need and what is the best way to offer it?"

He said affiliation also will help the three systems' senior care services survive amid state budget cuts, particularly on the home health side.

"The state has talked about moving people out of institutions and getting them into home care, but the governor's budget cuts hammered home care," Reed said. "In that kind of environment, size becomes more important. If we can spread costs over higher volume, we may be able to save and retain some of the services we may have had to cut."

Although the down economy has put a strain on hospital finances, and the hospitals do expect to save money by combining operations, Reed said that was not the main impetus for the talks. The main stumbling block to earlier affiliations, he said, was the fact that Northeast Health is secular and St. Peter's and its parent, Catholic Health East, are Catholic. He said that once the Berger Commission-the state panel that ordered the merger of several hospitals, including Ellis Hospital and the former St. Clare's in Schenectady-forced the issue, the two realized that their heritages did not have to prevent a marriage.

It was finally decided that the new parent corporation would be secular, but would join Catholic Health as a member. All member hospitals would follow the directives of the Catholic Church.

Reed said that prior to formal affiliation, Northeast will create a separate, independent health care entity at Samaritan.

    Achievement Award - James Reed
    ...
The 59-year-old Reed has been CEO of Northeast since January 2005. The Troy-based organization is parent to three hospitals—Samaritan, Albany Memorial and Sunnyview Rehabilitation. It is parent to nine primary care centers. It is parent to The Eddy, a 15-county network of nursing homes and retirement communities. And it has more than 3,400 employees, serving about 350,000 people a year.

Craig Duncan, Northeast's former CEO, credited Reed with taking the organization Duncan built and fostering it through "a terrible environment."
    ...
1 is the demand for higher quality medical care, and Jim has made that the priority for the whole organization, and with strong results. No. 2, everyone is concerned about costs and trying to cut costs from the health care system. Our margins in New York are the lowest in the United States. But he has been able to not only maintain, but expand, the organization."

It was under Reed that Sunnyview, in Schenectady, was added to the Northeast family in January 2007. The network's net patient revenue rose from $248 million in 2006—if you include Sunnyview's numbers—to $269 million in 2007. Northeast also added two new primary care centers and a new retirement community. It is now spending $41 million to replace two existing senior care facilities with a model called "green houses," which resemble private homes. It will be the first such project in the state.

Reed took a round-about path to get to where he is today. He received an economics degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He headed into a financial career in Manhattan, working first for International Paper Co. and then for Union Pacific Corp., where he eventually became director of acquisitions.

But in his mid-30s, what he has called "genetic loading" took over and Reed—whose family was made up of doctors and chemists—left the corporate world to become a doctor. He said he made that decision because, as satisfying as the corporate world could be, he wanted the feeling of having a direct impact on someone's life.

He earned his medical degree at Cornell University and did his residency in family practice at the former St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady. He then spent a decade with a primary care practice in Cropseyville, Rensselaer County, and eventually took a seat on the board of Northeast.
    ...
Reed said he agreed to become chief medical officer of Northeast because he had come to realize that most of the problems in health care were systemic, and that an entity like Northeast was well positioned to help solve them. A year later, he became chief operating officer. He stepped up to CEO when Duncan retired in 2005.

Wally Altes, former president of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce and a friend of Reed's, said Reed's background in two fields "allows him to see the problems he encounters at Northeast Health and handle them in a way others, without that experience, would not."
    ...
Reed is known as a "thought leader," whose opinions are respected and sought. He serves as a member of the state Hospital Review and Planning Council, and the boards of the Sage Colleges, Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Co., United Way of Northeastern New York, Troy Redevelopment Foundation and the Rubin Dialysis Center. He is also on the advisory boards of Berkshire Bank and Union Graduate College.

He also is known as a really nice guy.

"The more you talk to people about Jim, you start to wonder if anyone can really be that nice," Duncan said.
