With high school football games being played on Thursdays and Fridays, the natural grass field can't handle more games on Saturday by recreational leagues, said Kelvin Reagan, president of the Belmont Optist Club.
The athletic club hopes that using artificial turf at South Point High School would make that field available for rec league football and free up two other recreation fields on Boat Club Road for rec league soccer games on Saturdays, said Reagan.
Football is the most popular sport in the area, according to Reagan, and there isn't enough room for everyone to play.
"We're having to turn kids away," Reagan said.
