The following is a shortened, but otherwise unabridged version, of an in-depth interview with Hunt Partner's Mike Raytek and T&I's Editor in Chief, Jerry Borrell.

Hunt Partners, Managing Partner, Mike Raytek Sitting in a conference session at PEI's 2nd annual meeting in Hong Kong last week, one speaker noted simply and without emotion that there is ",a war for personnel," ongoing in private equity in Asia, after which we realized we had to allocate more precious time and space in T&I's publishing schedule to address the issues of hiring, retaining and growing teams in the region. To begin we've interviewed one of Hong Kong's best known financial and private equity recruitment firms, Hunt Partners and its Co-Founder in Hong Kong, Mike Raytek. Spend a bit of time with this former junior hockey player and you know quickly why Hunt is faring so well in Hong Kong; this easy going Canadian is a pleasant counterpoint to the world of larger than life egos and complex personalities that populate the corridors of power in Hong Kong. Raytek has worked in recruitment for 7 years, based in Hong Kong with the last four years focused on private equity. Over that period he has recruited staff in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.

Asked whether hyperbole is hard at work in the personnel issue, and whether we might be overreacting, Raytek responds that at the mid and upper levels of management, it's indeed true; for those managers who can source, close and exit deals, people with track records, Raytek says that there is a dearth of talent in the region, especially for Japan, India and China. As a footnote, all of the salaries in this story are given in US dollars. -
