Stepping Stone Community Services Society employment specialist Kalena Rayson has brought Toastmasters to individuals recovering from a metnal illness.
After joining the Walnut Grove Toastmasters a year ago and feeling more confident about her own public speaking skills, Rayson knew that it would help in building those same skills for individuals that go to Stepping Stone.
Stepping Stone supports individuals that are recovering from mental illness and part of that recovery can be re-entering the work force. Rayson explains that Toastmasters is for people who want to improve their communication and leadership skills.
"Perhaps you have experienced that uneasy feeling when being asked to speak in front of a group of people or you just want to be able to hold your audiences attention by having the knowledge and skill to know how to write and deliver a better presentation," she said. The Toastmasters group at Stepping Stone, although quite new, has already seen marked improvement in individuals comfort levels around speaking in front of a larger group and speech writing, she said.
"Whether you have to go and sell yourself to one employer in an interview or present to a larger audience, being prepared, feeling confident and having support are the key in anyone's everyday life."
Toastmasters Clubs can provide that key through a fun, supportive and focused environment at meetings.
"It promotes leadership, raises self esteem, confidence and improves listening skills which is why it is such a great fit for the employment program at Stepping Stone," said Rayson.
