   "It was a staggering, but very happy occasion," Ron Raynolds, interim superintendent of the Addison Central Supervisory Union, said of the combined total of $977,280 the Rogers estate has left to Middlebury Union High School and the Patricia Hannaford Career Center.

   Candidates must demonstrate "financial need" and a "deserving academic record," according to Raynolds. The $2,000 scholarships will be distributed to recipients in four annual, $500 installments.
   
   It's unknown, at this point, how many scholarships the money will generate annually. That will be determined by the interest yield on the principal, which the school district will invest.
   
   "I suspect the guidance office will make a proposal to be approved by the (school) board, as far as how many scholarships will be available," Raynolds said.
