"Most people don't realize that their diet and lifestyle, along with early detection, are the keys to help prevent osteoporosis," said Sandra Raymond, executive director of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, a partner in the Cruise for Calcium tour."This national tour helped raise awareness that osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease - and it empowered people to learn more about their own risk factors and the steps they can take to help keep a fracture out of their future."
Currently, one in two women and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.Raymond said a comprehensive program to help prevent osteoporosis includes four steps: A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, a healthy lifestyle with no smoking and limited alcohol intake, and bone density testing and medication when appropriate.
