Jeanne studied under Charles Raymond, the professor she credits with starting up Cal's journalism program. It was a two-year major then, she says, and "you also had to take philosophy, French literature, astronomy and psychology."

After Cal, while her husband finished law school, Jeanne worked at the Berkeley Gazette. She ran the classified advertising department and occasionally wrote features. She then worked at the Walnut Creek Courier-Journal, a now defunct weekly, where she "did everything," including selling classified ads, writing news and feature stories and shooting photos.

During the war, Jeanne was a secretary at the shipyards, then stayed home to take care of four daughters. She later had a job as society editor and columnist with the Lafayette Squire. After living in Princeton, N.J., for her husband's job, she moved back to California and worked for 15 years as a columnist for the Colfax Record.

"I didn't write like Herb Caen but he was my mentor in my mind," she says. She took a "tongue-in-cheek" approach to writing up the Boy Scouts meeting and the Ladies Garden Club.

"During all this time, I was growing old!"Jeanne says. She moved with her daughter and son-in-law to a sheep farm near Cincinnati, but found the small local paper "so ridiculous I didn't think I could stand to work there. That was end of my writing career."

She's still in touch with friends from the Daily Cal. "I keep track of a number of people from the Advertising Service Bureau because we got very close," says Jeanne, who now lives in McGregor, Texas, near Waco. She reports that Eleanor (Ivey) McIntosh '40 is in Twain Harte, Calif., near Grass Valley.
