James Ray, vice president and general manager of Eastman Chemical Texas Operations, said the Longview plant remains a vital role in the overall company's profit and revenue picture.

"The Longview site continues to play an integral role in the overall company," Ray said Thursday."The combination of assets and technologies in Longview is an important part of Eastman's ability to grow in key markets."

Ray said a strong sign of that importance is the investment Eastman continues to make locally.

"We are still spending significant capital dollars each year to enhance and maintain existing facilities. We are also making incremental capacity increases in selected product areas" he said.

"Our total 2008 annual capital expenditure is expected to be in excess of $100 million — this is the largest capital budget we've had in Longview for 15 years."

Ray said there are no major expansions planned for Eastman in Longview this year.

James Ray, president of Eastman's Texas Operations in Longview, said the uncertain times in the nation's and world's economy resulted in the decision.

"These are very unsure times," Ray said Tuesday. At the local level, the marching orders are to continue operations, he said.

"We plan to move forward operating as two separate organizations under one corporation," Ray said. The Longview operations were to be divided with about 350 of the current 1,900 local employees expected to be working under the new Voridian Co. after Jan. 1, while the majority would have been working for the spin-off company, Eastman Co.

"There's a lot of disappointment," Ray said."A lot of us were looking forward to getting this behind us and moving forward."

"The chemical industry is not upbeat," unlike the energy industry, according to James Ray, Eastman Chemical Company's Vice President and General Manager for Texas and Asia Pacific Operations. The chemical industry has been hurt by high gas prices: many US plants have been closed or idled. He called for a coherent national energy policy that would address gas supply issues through encouraging exploration and production and supporting construction of new non?gas-fired power generation. He recommended the clean-coal alternative of coal gasification or integrated gasification combined-cycle.

"This award is a nice validation of what we're trying to do every day," said James Ray, vice president and general manager, Texas Operations."It's critical that the people who live and work around our site are aware of our operations here and understand that we have programs in place to help protect them in the event of an emergency."

The award was presented to Eastman's Texas Operations by the Texas Chemical Council earlier this month.

"Many people in the area know that we have a very active Community Advisory Board," Ray said."Since 1990, it's been one of the vital links we have with the community where the 20 members can give us feedback on how we're doing and serve as our eyes and ears.

"But we also participate in the Local Emergency Planning Committees and encourage our employees to take active leadership roles in local organizations such as United Way and Jr. Achievement," Ray said."And we follow that up with financial support to a variety of area causes."

Texas Operations contributed more than $230,000 to numerous area causes in 2006, Ray said.
