Baroness Rawlings (English 1979)
Baroness Rawlings has made significant contributions to public life in Britain in both the voluntary sector and politics.Educated in the UK, Switzerland and Italy, she began a career in nursing before coming to UCL as a mature student.She went on to study for a graduate diploma in international relations at the London School of Economics.Her involvement in politics began when she stood as the Conservative candidate for constituencies in Sheffield and Doncaster in 1983 and 1987.From 1989,1994 she served as an MEP for Essex South West and she retains a strong interest in European affairs, particularly Eastern Europe.In 1994 she was elevated to the House of Lords, where she is currently Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Development.She has been a longstanding and very active member of the British Red Cross and received its Badge of Honour in 1987.She was elected Chairman of the Council of King,s College, London, in 1998 and was made a Fellow in July 2003.
