"I can understand how difficult it must have been for you to be forced to make the choices you did," wrote Rob Raskiewicz, a former Alma town marshal who withdrew his write-in candidacy after the shooting.

Town Marshal Rob Raskiewicz had been placed on administrative leave July 9 because of internal personnel problems, which the board emphasized were unrelated to charges leveled at the marshal last month by the Park County District Attorney.After a five-month investigation by the Park County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Raskiewicz was charged with felony bribery and official misconduct.He will be called before a judge Monday for an appearance on bond.

We have the chance to write in Rob Raskiewicz for sheriff.

I met Raskiewicz about a year ago in Alma.I knew within a few minutes there was something special about this guy.He seemed to have a true compassion to serve his community.He was friendly, appeared to be sincere, and, lets face it, I can't remember many cops besides Raskiewicz going out of their way to wave or say hello when I would pass by.

I was still skeptical.However, bopping around the county this year, I repeatedly encountered locals talking positively about Rob.He had truly gained the respect of the community.

I might point out that being politically active for more than 20 years, I go out of my way to know my local officials, also including the police.Ask one and see if we've met.

Raskiewicz seems to be concerned about keeping us safe in a manner that doesn't alienate him (as a law enforcement officer) from the community that he is entrusted to protect.

Since that time, I've had many hours of discussion with Raskiewicz, and I believe his community-oriented approach is the kind of law enforcement that's right for Park County.He pointed out that a lot of resources are wasted on tail light or other petty offenses, while real crimes go with little or no attention.

In 1999, I was the victim of burglary and vandalism.At 38 years old, ninety-five percent of all my property was stolen or destroyed in an attack.

I tried for seven weeks to get a deputy to take a report.I finally gave up.It happened again in 2000, same M.O., recognizable graffiti still there.

Raskiewicz assures me this is the kind of crime he will make a priority.

ALMA - Former Alma town marshal Rob Raskiewicz isn't talking about why he resigned from his job this week, and the mayor continues to insist the resignation is unrelated to felony bribery charges Raskiewicz faces.

In addition, court documents at the Park County Courthouse speak volumes about swirling legal matters involving Raskiewicz and his wife, Cheri.

Raskiewicz also faces a misdemeanor allegation in district court.

Raskiewicz's resignation has many residents of the small Park County town speculating - and talking, but not on the record with reporters for fear of run-ins with the embattled couple.

Raskiewicz resigned Tuesday following an executive session with Alma's elected officials.

Ensign did say that Raskiewicz, at times, did not fully comply with town officials' requests and that there were enough disagreements - although civil - that it was time for Raskiewicz and the town to part ways.

In a separate matter, on June 4, the district attorney filed charges of bribery and official misconduct against Raskiewicz.

Raskiewicz is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Residents and a witness identified in the court documents, however, said the charges arose when Raskiewicz's legal duties intersected with his wife's child-care business.

The case has become a contentious topic in the current sheriff's race, which pits incumbent Fred Wegener against a write-in candidate, Rob Raskiewicz, the town marshal of Alma.

Raskiewicz, Wegener's opponent in the sheriff's race, views the Gates case as a "huge issue" in the current campaign.A former Milwaukee police officer, he worked in the Park County sheriff's department for seven months but left last year because "I didn't agree with their policy," he says."Instead of looking for real crime, these cops were always on [U.S.] 285 looking for taillights out.They were more concerned about revenue than fighting crime."

Raskiewicz touts the benefits of community policing and says Wegener's deputies are too "unfriendly" and prone to overkill tactics, escalating minor interactions with traffic violators into major confrontations."The most important tool a department has is trust," he adds."I've worked in a rough area of a major city, and I didn't see this kind of attitude.It's seriously time for a change."
