ELLIOT RAPPAPORT has been a member of the waterfront instructional staff at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine since 1988.A 1986 graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio , Elliot has over 10 years' and 50 , 000 miles' experience in sail training and traditional sail , including two voyages to the Arctic , two transatlantics , and nine seasons on the coast of Maine.He's worked with the Sea Education Association of Woods Hole , Massachusetts , the brigantine ROMANCE , the Maine windjammer MARY DAY , and the schooner SURPRISE.Since 1992 Elliot has been the Master and chief educator aboard the Academy's sailing school vessel BOWDOIN , working in waters from southern New England to Greenland.He holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's license in Auxiliary Sail , 200 Tons , Ocean Endorsed and is certified in radar observation , marine firefighting , and emergency ship's medicine.
A retired carpenter , ELLSWORTH RICE has been carving half models of sail and power boats since 1983 when he decided to quit smoking : I needed something to do with my hands..Ellsworth has a background that also includes boatbuilding.He built prams , skiffs , and several 26' Thunderbird sloops when he worked in a small boatyard on the North River in Norwell , Massachusetts.He has always been fascinated with the challenge of carving a three-dimensional model from a set of line drawings.Ellsworth enjoys showing his half models at a number of East Coast boat shows , including the annual Wooden Boat Show , where they have always been well received.Many of his half models are in private collections throughout the country.
BRION RIEFF , an independent boatbuilder in Brooklin , Maine , has been involved with boats and sailing since his childhood on Long Island Sound , New York.These days Brion specializes in the design and construction of wooden sail and power boats.He learned the trade from master craftsmen from the old school , working in some of the finest yacht yards on the East Coast.Brion has a broad background in various types of wood construction.Recent building and design projects have included a 32' cold-molded yawl and a 24' center-console outboard.Brion also contributes to WoodenBoat magazine with product reviews and articles on boat repair and new construction.
