Silicon Valley venture capitalist Andy Rappaport and his wife, Deborah, have never been shy about their support for liberal politics.

Although both Andy, a partner with August Capital on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, and Deborah, a Portola Valley school board member, say they'd love to see President Bush turned out of office in January, they are even more focused on trying to cultivate support for progressive politicians in the future, producing the long-term dividends that VCs generally value.

Deborah noted that the couple have a similar approach to funding promising charities, something known as venture philanthropy.
For instance, they gave the founder of JazzMasters Workshop in Carmel Valley, which encourages young musicians, his first three years' of funding.

A fellow school board member, Donna Carano, said Deborah helped inspire her to register to vote and take a more active interest in politics several years ago.
