FHA spokesperson Jan Radford said there are many reasons some women do not access pre- and post-natal services, including difficulty finding a family physician and the fact there are "a very small number of doctors" who continue to practice obstetrics in the region. Radford agrees the need exists to provide more services for high risk women - the FHA started up its pre-natal clinic at SMH in 2001, and it has been a success.More than 1,100 babies have been delivered through that clinic, which today employs eight physicians. According to Atira, an estimated 40 per cent of women accessing the clinic use drugs and/or alcohol during their pregnancy. Radford supports the concept of Maxxine Wright Place.
