The company has not done "a lot of small box stores," said Bruce Quisno, operating vice president of construction for Federated Department Stores, Macy's parent company.

But he said the industry is changing and Macy's is committed to designing a store that San Luis Obispo can accept.

"We're trying to respond and be a partner with the governing body here and with San Luis Obispo," Quisno said.
