Officer Joe Quisler, who is trying to spearhead a series of initiatives to curb the recent spate of vandalism, says the spike in graffiti is just one symptom of a rise in juvenile recklessness plaguing the downtown area.
Petty crime -- vandalism, disorderly conduct, loitering -- has been gradually rising with the temperature, Quisler said.
Quisler is contemplating a variety of ways to address the problem, including a loitering ordinance, asking stores to offer paint discounts for victims of graffiti, and even broadcasting classical music on Main Street.
"We're trying to stay on top of these small problems and address them before they get to be bigger problems," Quisler said.
